Be
like a duck.
Calm on the surface,
but always paddling
like the dickens underneath.
~ Michael Cain The Sun was setting last night in Golden colors. We were
grateful to see it because it's been overcast and gray for a couple of days.
A group of ducks came over as we sat on the boat and they splashed and played as they have all summer.
Every year we get "Village Ducks". Sooner or later a Mama comes by with the little ones chirping behind her and we follow their progress as they grow up throughout the summer.
When we were building the house, we got very close to a couple of them. You could feed them by hand and M used to let them come up the steps right into the Kitchen.
A lot of us are guilty of feeding them and getting them used to being around people.
Then, On October 26th we get to listen as the guns go off. For weeks, they are hunted literally right in front of the house. We always hope their going to miss, or find something else to eat that day. Sometimes we start the new season with very few ducks. Now we are careful not to name them or get very close. It's hard to imagine anyone who's ever fed a duck, wanting to shoot it. I hope these little guys take off and make it until next year.
The perils of duck hunting are great,
especially for the duck.
